Atopic dermatitis: Nonpharmacologic interventions recommendations

There is strong evidence that the use of moisturizers should be implemented as part of the treatment of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) as this can reduce severity and the need for pharmacologic intervention.

  • Moisturizers should be applied soon after bathing
  • A limited use of nonsoap cleansers is recommended
  • The addition of oils, emollients, and most other additives to bath water cannot be recommended due to current insufficient evidence of those being effective
  • For those with moderate-to-severe AD, wet-wrap therapy may be recommended to reduce disease severity and water loss during flares
