Atopic dermatitis: Topical antimicrobials and antiseptics

Staphylococcus aureus is a common settler in the skin of those with atopic dermatitis (AD). With or without infection, it can trigger inflammatory responses due to toxins and further damages the skin barriers.

Clinically, topical antistaphylococcal treatments have not been shown to offer a benefit to patients with AD. However, bleach baths and intranasal mupirocin may be recommended for patients with moderate-to-severe AD.
